Port Orford Cedar Flute

This flute is made from Old Growth Port Orford Cedar. If you have never have had the pleasure to hold a piece of Port Orford Cedar then you are missing one of natures most pleasant aromas. Port Orford Cedar is actually a type of Cypress but in it's native range it is called Port Orford Cedar. These large trees grow up to 200 feet tall and have trunks with diameters in the 4-6 foot range. They grow only in the southwest part of the Oregon coast and the very northwest part of the California coast up to about 1500 feet in elevation. 3 Feathers Flute

3 Feathers Flute - Key of F# (click on images to enlarge)

This beautiful 5 hole flute is hand made from old growth Port Orford Cedar and features iron wood accents and windway. The windway is inlaid iron wood in two pieces. The focusing channel has a small hand crafted piece of iron wood that feeds the air through the narrow channel onto the sounding edge which is also made of inlaid iron wood. This flutes sound chamber was hand carved to approximately 7/8 inch diameter bore. The dimension of the inside bore of the barrel is approximate as it is completely hand carved and not created with a machine. The inside of the sound chamber was finished with 6-8 coats of Deft to seal the inside before gluing up. This is done so in order to help reduce the absorbtion of moisture from your breath into the wood.

The overall length of this flute is 23 1/2 inches and tapers from the windway down to the end of the barrel. This flute is a five holed flute tuned to the key of F#. The barrel of the flute is decorated with 4 Malichite Cabochons which are 8 mm in diameter. The bottom of the barrel has three tuning holes with deer leather laced above for additional accent. The Fetish on this flute is made from Iron wood and is in a shape that many have described as elk or antelope like. From the upper part of the barrel hangs 3 feathers that are replicas of the Flicker Woodpecker. These are hand painted feathers to look like the Flicker feathers of the woodpecker. These feathers 3 Feathers Port Orford Cedar Fluteare attached with a deerskin lace and a copper metal cone.

Finally this flute was finished with a minimum of 10 coats of Deft and then hand rubbed to give the flute an even soft finish. The flute is for sale by itself. The stand is extra and is not part of the price.

American Walnut FluteWalnut Flute - Key of F (click on images to enlarge)

This unique five hole Woodland style flute is hand made from American Black Walnut. Tuned to the key of F this flute plays really well. The flute's barrel was hand carved to an oval shape rather than a circle. The overall length of the flute is 24 inches even. The front edge of the sound hole is a bit larger than other flutes I have made and the result of this edge being a little further forward give this walnut flute a kind of breathy sound when played. This flute also is easy to play as it is fairly forgiving and allows the player more latitude on how hard or soft you play the instrument. Some may not like this breathy sound but we do - very much!

The barrel of the flute is decorated with 7 denim colored cabachons. Both the leather that holds the fetish and the lace accent at the end of the barrel is deer skin (tanned in the USA). The inside of the barrel and slow air chamber was finished with 6-8 coats of Deft in order to better seal the inside of the flute and help protect the wood from absobing too much moisture when played. The fetish is made from iron wood and some tell us they think it resembles an otter. Other have described it as a bird of prey. The windway or focusing channel is also made from iron wood with the as is the front edge of the sound hole.

American Walnut FluteOne of the nice results of the oval shapped barrel was that the flute is very easy to hold and play. It seems to have a more ergonimic feel in your hands. The tone of the walnut gives this flute an very nice tone. Finally the flute is finished with 8-10 coats of deft and hand rubbed to a soft satin finish. This is a very nice easy flute to play.

Port Orford Cedar Flute - Key of F (click on images to enlarge)

Port Orford Cedar FluteThis flute is also made from Old Growth Port Orford Cedar.

This beautiful hand made flute is a five hole flute tune to the Key of F. This flute was made from the same piece of old growth Port Orford Cedar as the "3 Feathers Flute" above. The overall length of this flute is 23 1/2 inches and the bore of the barrel is approximately 1". Like many of the flutes we make the focusing channel of the windway was inset into the body of the flute rather than being carved into the bottom of the fetish. The splitting edge of the true sound hole is also inlaid iron wood.

Port Orford CedarThe fetish is our "Otter" design although others tell us it reminds them of many other animals which is also made from iron wood. the fetish is afixed with a wide piece of deer skin lace. There are three Tigers Eye Cabachons inset into the barrel of the flute above, middle and below the finger holes for accent. At the bottom of the flute it is laced with deer skin Lace in a pleasing design. Like all of our flutes it is finished both inside with at least 6-8 coats of Deft to help with moisture control. The outside of the flute has a minnimum of 10 coats of Deft with the final few coats hand rubbed to a soft satin finish.

This flute found it's home with Nakoa Heavyrunner from Havre, Montana. Nakoa is a well know Native American artist who has produced many Native American music CDs, videos and he has produced many other Native American bands. Nakoa is Assiniboine and is the son of Donovan and Laurie Archambault. Donovan is well known throughout the Northwest into Canada as well as the Southwestern part of the U.S. for the beautiful Ceremonial Native American pipes he makes. Old Growth Walnut, Brock Jennings Signature Flute - Custom Ordered by Steve Wright - (Click on images to enlarge) Key of D

Blue Ribbon AwardCustom made flute for Steve Wright of Coronado, California. Steve had the opportunity to visit us here in Jackson Hole, Wyoming during a fishing trip this past summer. Steve fell in love with some of the flutes we had already finished and after playing with them decided he wanted one of his own. We built a Brock Jennings Signature flute for Steve out of Old Growth Walnut that was harvested from the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains outside of Boulder, Colorado. This flute was part of our presentation at the Western Design Conference held here in Jackson Hole this summer. We were awarded the Blue Ribbon, Sonny Tutle Award for our flutes.

S Wright NAF Flute Steve ordered a custom fetish that would represent an eagle or bird of prey with the wings spread. This took some time to create but it was a nice touch to the custom flute. The fetish was also made from a piece of old Fetishgrowth walnut and the base of the fetish is from the same piece of wood. Note the white color of the fetish base. This flute is a big flute by normal standards and played a wonderfully deep tone. We added 3 red Flicker feathers that hangs from the center of the flute and all the leather accents ending up being made form deer skin lace, black in color. Finally we shipped the flute to Steve and we are please to report he loved it.

Port Orford Cedar Flute - Custom Ordered by Tom Mitchell - Key of A(click on images to enlarge)

Port Orford Cedar Native American Styled FlluteThis Port Orford Cedar Flute was custom made for Tom Mitchell in Oregon. Made from old growth Port Orford Cedar and tuned to the key of A this is a really nice sounding instrument. The overall dimensions of the flute are smaller in length and the boar of the barrel is also smaller making the tone of the flute in the higher range of the key of A. We really liked how this flute came out and the warm rich tones that the Port Orford Cedar flutes make is really a pleasure to listen to. The flute was finished with a bear fetish made from Ironwood and decorated with a single tear dropped shaped turquoise cabachon.
