Old Growth Black Walnut
Although black walnut can be found pretty much throughout the United States there are pockets of some really unique walnut that offers the flute maker some very cool coloring in their blanks. Most of our black walnut is individually selected by us and it comes from the eastern slope of the Colorado Rockies. The trees that are being salvaged today were planted in most cased around the time of the Oregon Trail. These trees were not indigenous to this region yet they thrived once planted. Mostly planted around the University of Colorado at Boulder and the farms that popped up all over the eastern slopes - these trees were prized for the shade they provided around the farms. Today they are old, some are sick, some are the victims of development and others are simply cut down because they have become too big. They are harvested and flitch cut and then air dried for several years before they are ready. Colors can vary depending on what soil they grew in with colors ranging from the traditional black walnut color, reddish colorings, to mixed light browns and even some very white sap wood coloring. The picture to the right is a set of Black Walnut Blanks selected by a client in Canada. This picture if representative of the walnut we seek to gather.
Old Growth River Reclaimed Mahogany Blanks
Our newest addition to our product line is more than just wood. It is the chance to own a piece of history. Formally British Honduras, now Belize, all of our Mahogany is the real deal. All of the lumber coming to us has been reclaimed by a single U.S. company that has the exclusive salvage right to harvest Old Growth Honduran Mahogany logs that were cut as far back as the late 1600's. These are truly a piece of history and the only true source that we know of where you can now purchase the very same lumber that was prized by the British for their ships and furniture made for the monarchy. More important these trees were cut up to 200+ years ago so you can own a piece of history and know that you are not contributing to the destruction of the tropical rain forests.
This lumber is the very same lumber that was being used in the 1700's and is considered to be the true original old growth stock. Growth rings in this river reclaimed lumber can vary from 40 to more than 100+ per inch. Other species that we will be stocking are Sapodilla, Santa Maria, Bullet Tree, Cocobollo, Caribbean Pine and some very very rare logs that are virtual historic artifacts. We will be posting available flute blank stock as we are able to get pictures of individual boards. For those who may be interested in some of the rarest logs please contact us for more information.
New Blank Grading System
Because old growth and old growth reclaimed lumber can vary from board to board we are implementing a grading system here in our shop to help better describe the characteristics of individual blanks and blank packages. The goal is to provide you with some sort of measure as to how we view a individual blank stock. To try and keep things simple we have created 4 very simple labels that will help you with selection, in addition to any product descriptions and picture provided. Blank stock that we think is the best of the best will receive the higher mark and price points will be set accordingly. Some of the lumber we know that we have coming in may be the only time we will ever see it in our lifetimes and such they will command the higher grade and price point. We will be phasing in this grading system as we add new flute blank stock. If you have question give us a call.
- A-1 - Blanks with this grading will be in our opinion the best of the best. This will include very rare, hard to find wood stock. Exceptional coloring and grain patterns and usually these will be matched blanks sets or render matched sets from a solid blanks or boards.
- A -Blanks with this grading will be in our opinion blanks with great flute making characteristics. Not necessarily one of a kind stock but very very nice old growth timber. Blanks within this grade may also be book matched or side by side matched from a single board. Most of our Alaskan Yellow Cedar and our Port Orford Cedar will carry this grading.
- B - Blanks with this grading will be very nice blanks that are generally not matched. Most of the time they will be blanks from the same board but not booked matched sets.
- C - Blanks with this grading may have some imperfections such as tight knots, or other blemishes. This does not mean they are not nice blanks - depending on what your are looking for these imperfections may add just the character you are looking for.
