Black Walnut Native American Flute BlanksOld Growth Black Walnut

Although black walnut can be found pretty much throughout the United States there are pockets of some really unique walnut that offers the flute maker some very cool coloring in their blanks. Most of our black walnut is individually selected by us and it comes from the eastern slope of the Colorado Rockies. The trees that are being salvaged today were planted in most cased around the time of the Oregon Trail. These trees were not indigenous to this region yet they thrived once planted. Mostly planted around the University of Colorado at Boulder and the farms that popped up all over the eastern slopes - these trees were prized for the shade they provided around the farms. Today they are old, some are sick, some are the victims of development and others are simply cut down because they have become too big. They are harvested and flitch cut and then air dried for several years before they are ready. Colors can vary depending on what soil they grew in with colors ranging from the traditional black walnut color, reddish colorings, to mixed light browns and even some very white sap wood coloring. The picture to the right is a set of Black Walnut Blanks selected by a client in Canada. This picture if representative of the walnut we seek to gather.

Blank Grading System

Because old growth and old growth reclaimed lumber can vary from board to board we are implementing a grading system here in our shop to help better describe the characteristics of individual blanks and blank packages. The goal is to provide you with some sort of measure as to how we view a individual blank stock. To try and keep things simple we have created 4 very simple labels that will help you with selection, in addition to any product descriptions and picture provided. Blank stock that we think is the best of the best will receive the higher mark and price points will be set accordingly. Some of the lumber we know that we have coming in may be the only time we will ever see it in our lifetimes and such they will command the higher grade and price point. We will be phasing in this grading system as we add new flute blank stock. If you have question give us a call.

  • A-1 -  Blanks with this grading will be in our opinion the best of the best.  This will include very rare, hard to find wood stock.  Exceptional coloring and grain patterns and usually these will be matched blanks sets or render matched sets from a solid blanks or boards.
  • A -Blanks with this grading will be in our opinion blanks with great flute making characteristics. Not necessarily one of a kind stock but very very nice old growth timber.  Blanks within this grade may also be book matched or side by side matched from a single board.  Most of our Alaskan Yellow Cedar and our Port Orford Cedar will carry this grading.
  • B - Blanks with this grading will be very nice blanks that are generally not matched. Most of the time they will be blanks from the same board but not booked matched sets.
  • C - Blanks with this grading may have some imperfections such as tight knots, or other blemishes. This does not mean they are not nice blanks - depending on what your are looking for these imperfections may add just the character you are looking for.

NAF Flute BlanksBuild Your Own Flute...

Building your own flute? We stock ready to ship pre-bored flute blanks in many configurations. We do our best to match each blank set as much as possible.  We spend a great deal of money and time seeking very nice wood stocks for our flutes. Most of our wood comes direct from smaller mills and specialty suppliers. Because of our specs our wood stock lots come in smaller amounts as many times that is all there is for a given moment in time. We seek out old growth, first generation cut stock and in many cases this stock will come from reclaimed sources.

We are no longer shipping lumber - just flute blanks in three options. Pre-bored blanks sets, pre-glued blanks and finished flutes. We stock flute blanks in both 24" inch and 30" inch lengths. Give us call or shoot us an email if you have questions or you are looking for something unique.

NAF Flute BlanksOption One:

If you are looking for a set of blanks that give you the basic foundation of the flutes components already crafted for you order one of our pre-bored blank sets. We stock blanks that have had the slow air chamber, flute bore and the blow hole already crafted for you.  These blanks are of the same dimension as Option One above.  Flute bores are available in 3/4", 7/8" and 1" diameters and we offer 1 1/2" bores on special order.

In addition we now create the basis for the focusing channel and the majority of the windway for you. We cut the exit hole from the slow air chamber and the entry hole for the cutting edge. So you will have the majority of the work done for you and placed in the proper position ready for you to fine tune your windway area. However you will still be responsible for crafting the ramp of your cutting edge and fine tuning of the sound hole itself.

All of our windways are cut 3/8" wide and the solid block between the Sow Air Chamber and the Beginning of the Flute bore is 1 1/8" across. The cutting edge area is 3/8" wide by 6.24 mm front to back. The cutting edge should end up being about 7 - 8 mm front to back when finished. These flute blanks are surface on 4 sides so they are ready to glue once you have completed the work in both halves. If you need help laying out your flute shoot us an email at sales@tetonmarketing.com.

Weather you are a hobbiest or an accomplished Native American Flute builder, ordering one our flute blank sets can simplify getting started on building you flute right away.  The need for larger equipment is eliminated and you will save time, money and space in your workshop. To order a set of blanks using this option you will need to call us to place your order or visit our flute blanks page. Call us at (307) 690-0427.

Native American Flute BlanksOption Two:

From time to time we offer fully completed blanks that have been pre-bored to specific sizes. Each blank prior to gluing is sanded and sealed in the very same way we seal our custom flutes. We pre-seal the inside of the flute bore, slow air chamber and blow hole. The windway has been constructed for you and the the flute blanks have been glued together. Finally we have made sure the flute plays a base note but we have not determined the fundamental note for any of these blanks. These partially completed flute blanks are ready for you to find the fundamental base note you want and they are ready for you to lay out your playing holes. We recommend hand shaping them with a good block plane. There is nothing more satisfying than hand planning your flute to the desired shape. Something you cannot achieve on a lathe.

If you haven ever built a flute from the ground up this might be a good way to start. Pricing is primarily determined by the wood species the blanks are crafted from. Some of our blanks can feature inlays in the windway area to help achieve both an aesthetic accent and in some cases to strengthen the cutting edge. For those who still want to turn the pre-glued blanks on the lathe check out our End Cap attachment system for turning blanks on a lathe.

Flute Makers Inlay Materials

Inlay NAF FluteAdd a special something to your Native American Flute can be fun and challenging. We stock wood boards that have been selected as good material to create inlays for your flute. Most of our wood we have selected for inlay material will come in 24" x 4" x 1/4" to 3/8" thicknesses. Most of our inlays we do are in the windway area of the flute. This makes for a strong cutting edge as well as a very pleasing aesthetic addition to the flute.

Each inlay board will render you many many inlays for current and future flute projects. This is good material too for other crafting projects where you need a thinner, smaller board.

Black Elk Skin BagOwning a Native American Styled flute is a wonderful thing. If you are like many flute owners you will end up owning more than one and from many different flute makers. Every once and a while you will come across a flute that is really special to you and maintaining your flute in top condition is critical. Some people collect flutes and there are just some flutes where you need that special case to keep your flute safe. Every flute we ship we ship with a protective flute bag. For those who are looking for something more substantial and something that will add value to your special flute then consider one of our hand crafted flute bags.

Our custom bags were designed in collaboration with Riversong Studios in Laramie, Wyoming. Every bag is hand crafted from hand selected hides in both Elk and Bison (Buffalo). We try to stock a selection of bags as many of our higher end flutes are sold with the case as part of the purchase. We offer two styles of cases, one that is a bit wider at the top which helps accommodate larger fetish blocks without having to remove them before placing in the bag. The second styled bag is a bit slimmer with more of a tapered slot towards the bottom of the bag. Choose between hand laced edges or a clean hidden seam. Some bags feature longer fringe while others are shorter in length. No two bags are the same.

Western Design Conference Flute BagEvery bag is lined on the inside with a softer leather lining that will keep your flutes finish in great shape. Each bag has a small loop at the top of the bag that allows the bag to be hung on the wall if desired. Bags are available in Chocolate Brown, Black, Buckskin and some specialty colors. Bags can be per-ordered and delivery time is proximately 2 weeks if not in stock. All flute bag prices include shipping within 48 contiguous states. We ship via FEDEX Ground whenever possible.
